Lenovo Threadripper Pro: Experience A New Generation of Workstation Computing

Lenovo Threadripper Pro Workstation

Guest Author: Rob Hoffmann

For years, artists and production studios developing content for film, television and video games have been under pressure to continually deliver increasingly higher fidelity experiences.

The movie going, Netflix watching, and gaming audiences expect each new entertainment experience to be better than their previous experience. As a result, the artists and studios are being tasked with developing and delivering substantially higher fidelity experiences. This is compounded with 4k, and in the not so distant future 8k, along with delivery times not scaling with the content requirement, while budgets too are not scaling with the increased complexity.

There is a growing gap between what is being asked of the artists and studios to deliver, and ultimately the resources to complete the work. Increasing production efficiency is key to bridging this gap, and while artists and studios can continue to explore and refine their production techniques, this can only go so far. The responsibility also falls on those developing the tools used in production. Through performance advances, adopting real-time technologies, and optimizing software solutions, what was once impossible, or at least, impractical is now within reach.

One of the biggest changes on the production horizon is the introduction and availability of the Lenovo ThinkStation P620 workstations, powered by AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper Pro CPUs.

P620 will this allow artists to be more efficient in the work they are doing, while also freeing them to experiment and iterate more easily to create a higher fidelity results in less time.

With high frequency, high core count options to choose from, the P620 is well suited for use in most production functions across the entire production pipeline. From 3D animation and compositing, to editing, creative finishing, rendering and compiling, the P620 is what artists and production facilities have been waiting for.

In addition to powerful processing power, the ThinkStation P620 also brings new technologies to market. The average lifespan for a workstation in production can range between three to five years. In this time, artists and studios need to maximize the performance of their investment, in part by upgrading components, such as graphics cards, or adding capabilities, including more memory or storage. The P620 comes standard with PCIe gen 4 support, futureproofing the investment to leverage faster memory, storage, graphics and any new PCIe gen 4 offerings that will be available for faster I/O performance.

ThinkStation P620 also has an 8-channel memory architecture allowing for more data to move in and out of memory even faster. This is similar to lanes of a highway: more lanes can handle more traffic, or data, with fewer traffic jams and at a greater speed. This also means, it’s not just about the amount of memory, but how the workstation can actually maximize its use.

Additionally, as data sets are getting more complex and as a result, the file sizes are larger, moving data on and off the ThinkStation P620 is quick and simple with onboard 10GB ethernet being standard. This allows not only for fast data transfer, but also means there’s no sacrifice of a valuable PCIe slot, leaving more space for additional 3rd party cards or for an additional GPU to be installed.

At the end of the day, art creation tools should be a boring, background experience. While this may sound odd, the idea is the artist should not notice their tools, and only focus on the art itself. In other words, ensure the tools for creating art are no longer a barrier between the artist and the art they are creating. It’s time for production tools to operate at the speed of the artist and not vice versa.
